  1. Read the CURRENT edition of the Merit Badge Book

Komatsu has been involved in mining for almost 140 years and will host an interactive day to introduce mining to Scouts BSA members.  Throughout the day, Scouts will gain the knowledge and understanding of surface and underground mining, discuss various minerals and their use in our daily lives, learn of the mining equipment needed to extract those minerals from the earth, and become familiar with the potential hazards that miners may face and the required equipment used to keep them safe.  Scouts will come to realize what life would be like without mining, take a virtual tour inside the Kennecott mine in Utah, and understand how the lands are returned to a natural state following the removal of all materials.  Hands-on activities include operating a Shovel Simulator, an overview of our electrical control systems, operating scale model Shovel and Drill equipment using joystick controls and a tour of our new Operator Cab using VR technology.  All requirements for the Mining in Society Merit Badge will be met and Blue Cards will be signed and returned at the close of the event.

We take “Be prepared” seriously. The Scouts should too.
