Citizenship in the World Merit Badge Clinic

Join us for the Citizenship in the World Merit Badge Clinic at Indian Mound Scout Reservation on Saturday, August 20, 2022.  The clinic will begin at 1:00 pm.

Scouts explore what it means to be a member of the global community while working on the Citizenship in the World badge. They learn about international law and international organizations such as the United Nations, the World Health Organization, and the European Union. Scouts also find out about relationships between nations and the role of the US State Department and ambassadors.

The Citizenship in the World badge is required for the rank of Eagle Scout.

This badge involves a lot of work done in advance by the Scout.  The workshop is intended to provide an opportunity to present on or discuss this work.  Scouts who have not done the work in advance will get a partial; scouts who come with the following should be able to earn the badge that day.  Scouts must have approval of Scoutmaster to attend and bring a blue card.  In addition, scouts should come prepared with the following:

  • Be prepared to discuss the rights, duties and obligations of the citizens of two other countries and how these compare to U.S. citizens (Req. 2.)
  • Pick a current world event and present on how a country’s national interest, history, and relationship with other countries might affect areas such as its security, its economy, its values, and the health of its citizens.  (Req. 3.a.)
  • Identify a foreign country and present on how that country’s geography, natural resources, and climate influence its economy and global partnerships with other countries.  (Req. 3.b.)
  • Be prepared to explain how international law differs from national law, the role of international law, and how international law can be use as a tool for conflict resolution (Req. 4.a.)
  • Complete 4.c. and be ready to discuss the two organizations.  My intent is we will focus on the UN and the World Court particularly in light of the Russian/Ukraine conflict, however, if some scouts choose a different organization they can do so.  (Req. 4.c.)
  • Identify five types of governments currently in power in the world and be able to show the location of a country that uses each of the five types of governments chosen on a world map.  I’ll supply the map at the workshop.  (Req. 5.b. and 5.c.)
  • Read and be prepared to discuss all of Requirement 6 – note that the Bureau of International Information Programs was dissolved in 2019 – don’t worry about this one – we’ll discuss the change.  (Req. 6.b.)
  • Have visited the U.S. State Department’s website and learned about an issue on the website to present on.  (Req. 7.a.)
  • Either – prepare 7.b. to present on that day or affirm attendance or participation in an international event (Milwaukee hosts these all the time in the Summer – scouts should note that Irish Fest is the same weekend)(Req. 7.e.)  If a scout has done 7.c. or 7.d., that will be accepted as well.
