* Webelos walkabout can be completed with the remaining 2 mile hike
* Cast Iron Chef has to be completed at home by helping cook dinner

First Aid

  • Explain what first aid is, tell what you should do after and accident
  • Show what to do for hurry cases of first aid:
    • serious bleeding
    • heart attack or sudden cardiac arrest, stopped breathing
    • stroke
    • poisoning
  • Show how to help a choking victim.
  • Show how to treat for shock.
  • Demonstrate how to treat at least five of the following:
    • Cuts and scratches
    • Burns and scalds
    • Blisters on the hand or foot
    • Nosebleed
    • Frostbite

Hiking Safety and Preparation

  • Stretch and warm up your muscles
  • The six essentials to take along on a hike
    • First aid kit
    • Whistle
    • Sun protection
    • Trail Food
    • Water
    • Flashlight
  • The buddy system
    • Have them explain why it’s important
  • Choose appropriate clothing to wear on a hike
    • For different seasons and different weather
  • What to do when you become lost (STOP)
    • Stay put – It is easier for rescuers to find a stationary person than one who is moving. Find a place which is not hazardous and stay there. Have some water and a snack if possible. Rest.
    • Think – Consider what resources you have should the situation extend into overnight. Develop confidence by considering your situation and being prepared.
    • Observe – Take note of your surroundings. Is there shelter from the cold or storms? Is it getting dark? Are there hazards in the area?
    • Plan – Determine what you can to do to conserve energy and be as comfortable as possible. Don’t panic. Rely on your knowledge and observations.

Discuss showing respect for wildlife

  • If they don’t animals will either fight back or become extinct
  • Easy ones are dodo, passenger pigeon, woolly mammoth, sabretooth tiger

Show what to do in a natural disaster

  • Lightning, Tornado, Flash flood, 

Plants and Animals

  • Poisonous animals
    • Brown Recluse, Northern Black Widow
    • Timber Rattler and Eastern Massasauga
  • Poisonous Plants to avoid on a Wisconsin hike
    • Cow and Wild Parsnip, Poison Ivy, Stinging and Wood Nettle
  • 4 trees, 4 plants in the area
    • Oaks, Maples, Pines (pictures)
  • Count the rings game
  • Signs that an animal has been around
    • Partially eaten leaves or flowers
    • Scratches on trees
    • Animals droppings
    • Tracks
  • 2 different birds that live in the area
    • Cardinals and Robins (facts about both)
  • Extinct animals
    • Pick one and discuss how/why it became extinct and that that means
       

Cooking and Fire Building

  • Prepare for cooking by explaining the importance of planning, tool selection, sanitation, and cooking safety.
  • Make trail mix and hot cocoa. 
  • Show how to use a camp stove, Dutch oven, box oven, solar oven, open campfire, or charcoal grill.
  • Identify three foods that you think would be good choices and three foods that would not be good choices.
  • Explain the importance of hand washing before a meal and cleanup after a meal. Then show how you would do each.
  • Show that you know the difference between a fruit and a vegetable. Eat one of each.
  • Learn the three ways to build a fire
    • Log Cabin, Teepee, Lean-To
  • The three things required to start a fire
    • Heat, oxygen, fuel
  • The three types of wood
    • Tinder, kindling and fuel
